Hard to believe but in all the years that I've visited London and the United Kingdom never have I ever tasted the quintessential British Christmas dessert, Mince Pies. Chalk it up to my fear of the mincemeat filling; something sweet with the name "meat" in it? Hmmmm...I'll pass, thanks. It was only after seeing Paul Hollywood's recipe did I figure it was time to give them a try.
Paul is one of my baking Yodas and I loved how his version took pre-made mincemeat filling and doctored it up with citrus zest and chopped
apples. For the crust I used America's Test Kitchen's recipe for sweet tart pastry or pâte sucrée.
Happy Christmas to All!

Funny how travel memories stick with us in unique ways. I remember reading about Mince Pies for years before actually seeing them in person on a chilly December trip. My hesitation towards odd dessert ingredients mirrors your initial doubt; I once avoided trying weirdly named friday night funkin milk tea until peer pressure pushed me. Sometimes, those small leaps make for surprising favorites, don’t they?
ReplyDeleteI completely understand that initial hesitation about mincemeat! I had the exact same reaction when I first heard the name years ago. Like you, I avoided mince pies for the longest time until a British friend finally explained that there's no actual meat involved - just dried fruits, spices, and sometimes a splash of brandy. When I finally tried them at a Christmas market in Edinburgh, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious they were. The sweet, spiced filling paired with buttery pastry was absolutely delightful. Now they're a holiday tradition in my home! When you need a break from baking, Italian Brainrot Clicker makes for some mindless fun.
